SINOPTICON - Contemporary Chinoiserie

Stephanie Douet and Eliza Gluckman will talk about their part in the Sinopticon project, from its beginnings among antique vases and sideboards, its symposium at the Vand A; its taking over Plymouth for an exphibition that included 14 artists including Erica Tan, Christian Jankowski and Grayson Perry; and its next efflorescnece in Danson House this April.

Sinopticon looks at ways that various artists use a contemporary take on the historical form Chinoiserie to examine aspects of European and Chinese culture. Through form and decorative narrative in chinoiserie we can discuss value and taste, fantasy, replication and stereotyping of images. So too, the darker elements of chinoiserie’s historical routes; identity politics, racism, trade and production values, authorship and the contested territory of exoticism. This project looks to unpick these themes through contemporary art, to shed light on how pervasive Chinese culture, industry and aesthetics are in our everyday lives.
